De Chirico
Toronto, Ontario - 2008

What this is...

Low angle early morning light streaking between downtown office towers to illuminate the facade of an older building.

My thoughts on this image...

Anyone who have ever seen the work of Giorgio de Chirico does not easily forget the surreal sense of isolation and fear that exudes from those images. Paintings such as Enigma of the Hour (1911), The Red Tower (1913) and The Nostalgia of the Infinite (1914); all portray oddly illuminated architectural structures with indistinct human-like figures within.

This image reminded me very much of one of De Chirico's paintings, with the odd light, deep shadows and the surrealistic view of both the building and the cyclist it's easy to mistake this for a dream.
