Ancient Willow
Alliston, Ontario - 2006

Willow tress are amazing in their ability to survive. They grown to enormous size and eventually split as a result of their own weight. But unlike most trees that would die as a result of the trunk being split from the roots, Willows put down new roots and the severed trunk will begin to grow as a new tree.

This tree lives in a damp creek valley just outside of Alliston. The tree has split and the fallen trunk has begun to establish roots and new shoots are reaching out for the sunlight. Eventually the original trunk will rot away, and a new willow tree will have established itself and start the process over again.
