Alone With Millions 1
Toronto, Ontario - 2008

What this is...

Low angle early morning light streaking through the canyons of glass and steel that is downtown Toronto.

My thoughts on this image...

Taken during the time I was a building surveyor measuring a vacant floor in a downtown office tower. These early morning images of long shadows, brilliant reflections and isolated figures moving through the relatively few open spaces found in large urban centers struck me as horribly scary. Millions of people move through these spaces every day lost in their own thoughts, doing everything in their power to avoid any form of contact with others. Tens of millions of people live every day of their lives in exactly this manner and the isolation of these images filled me with a sense of loss.

What is lost? Our sense of community... our compassion... our humanity.

A second image taken at the same time, Alone With Millions 2 makes a wonderful companion to this image and I love the way they look when paired Alone With Millions 1 and 2.
